Herbert Richard Langer
April 3, 2018
Herbert Richard Langer, 89, left us to join his wife, Martha, on April 3, 2018, just seven months after she left. He was born in Manchester, NH in May of 1928 to Ella (Schricker) and Arthur Langer. At the time of Martha’s passing, they had been married for 67 years.
Herb earned a mechanical engineering degree from UNH, a proud Sigma Beta, but in his heart he was an inventor. In his early career, he worked at Keller Products, where his association with Bob Keller had a profound impact on his life by shaping his business and inventing mind. In the 1950's, he made the move to W.F. Schonland’s and, under the tutelage of his uncle, Ed Schonland, quickly became the moving force behind the growth of the company, eventually becoming an owner. After the company was sold to Labatt, he started a second career buying and growing the Avilite and Plastifoam companies. He had the foresight to see that the mill building the companies were renting had the rare asset of parking in the Manchester millyard and figured someday that might be valuable. Langer Place was a labor of love for the whole family for 25 years, recently selling to accommodate - what else - a parking garage! He sure could see through the weeds.
Herb’s extended Schricker family was his north star and the annual Christmas gathering was his favorite day of the year. He and Martha were fortunate to travel all over the world, but he was happiest working on the camp at Baboosic Lake, where he grew up, or tinkering with his next new invention. He was a very bright, talented force of nature who was constantly working on his next entrepeneurial adventure - right up until the end.
Herb is survived by his son William Langer, daughters, Jan Langer, Carol Langer, Lynn Langer and her partner Alan Wetmore. He is also survived by his large Schricker family and many dear family members on Martha’s side.
He is predeceased by his brothers Arthur and Richard and by his sister Eleanor Weigler.
